The
Society
As its name suggests, the Society caters for the Chinchilla, Silver Tabby
and Smoke breeds. It also caters for Golden Persians, for which it undertook
the work of gaining recognition and Championship status. The Society also
provides classes at its own show for Exotic shorthairs of the Societys
colours.
History
The Society was formed in 1908 by the amalgamation of two rival clubs; the
Silver Society, founded in 1900 by Mrs Champion of Argent chinchillas,
which was subsequently enlarged to include Smokes, and the name changed to
the Silver & Smoke Persian Cat Society in 1902, and The Chinchilla Cat Club,
founded in 1901 by Mrs Balding. With the creation of the GCCF in 1910, the
various clubs and societies then in existence were granted representation by
Delegates. As a founder member, the Society is still entitled to privileged status of
representation, whatever its membership.
The Cats
This is what it is all about, and the Society exists to promote the well being
and correct breeding of our lovely varieties. We run a Welfare and Rescue
service for all our breeds, operated via our Regional Representatives, and
encourage all breeders not to over breed, and to ensure their kittens have
good homes, with the emphasis on neutering and spaying. Our purpose built
Rescue Unit is being enlarged to enable us to extend the important work of
re-homing cats of our varieties. These come to us for various reasons, and
we ensure they are assessed, vaccinated, spayed/neutered and have any necessary
veterinary attention before being placed with new caring owners. All new homes
are checked before cats are placed.
The Honorary Secretary holds a kitten register, available to those looking for a kitten. Please contact her direct.
Activity
As we have watched the Cat Fancy expand at an enormous rate over the past
25 years, the Society has also had to grow to cater for the demands of todays
breeders and exhibitors. The committee of 15 is made up largely of active
breeders/exhibitors, several with many years of experience to offer the members.
Collectively, the committee puts in many hours of work to advise novices,
produce a Journal, an annual Breeders Register and an annual Championship
Show, as well as the day to day running of the Society.
